A new employee as a mirror for knowledge management

Originally posted on: Eluxis
My name is Isa Veltmaat, and I recently joined Eluxis as an instructional designer. This is my first job after completing my Bachelor's degree in Technical Medicine and Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering. It's a somewhat different path from many of my colleagues, who often have a background in educational sciences. Precisely because of that difference, I bring a fresh perspective to knowledge and learning.

From technology to knowledge

During my studies, much of my work revolved around understanding technical systems, data, and processes in the medical field. Along the way, I learned not only about the technology itself, but also how to communicate information to different stakeholders, such as physicians, patients, and engineers.

Today, my focus is on making knowledge accessible to others. At first glance, these may seem like two very different worlds, but I am increasingly discovering how closely connected they actually are. In both cases, the goal is to understand complex information, bring structure to it, and make that knowledge useful for the right audience.

A fresh perspective as a newcomer

In my first weeks as an instructional designer, I have learned a tremendous amount. About the organization, the profession, and everything that comes with starting your first job.

One thing I have noticed is how often you rely on the knowledge and experience of colleagues. You ask questions, look up information, and continuously try to understand how everything fits together. It is during this process that you realize how valuable it is when knowledge is well documented and easy to find.

More than just documents

What I have learned so far is that knowledge management goes far beyond simply storing documents. It is also about ensuring that information remains findable, up to date, and useful for the people who need it.

As a newcomer, I experience firsthand how much of a difference this can make. At the same time, I see that this is a challenge for many organizations. Knowledge is often scattered across systems, documents, and the minds of employees. These are exactly the kinds of challenges that Eluxis helps organizations address, ensuring that valuable knowledge is not lost and can be shared more effectively.

Knowledge that keeps working

During my studies, my primary focus was on building my own knowledge. Now, I am learning how important it is to share knowledge with others as well.

As a new employee, I benefit every day from the knowledge that colleagues before me have built and documented. This has shown me that knowledge management is not just about collecting information. It is about enabling learning, collaboration, and the transfer of knowledge to the next person.

Do you recognize the challenge of preserving, transferring, and keeping knowledge accessible within your organization? Or are you curious about how Eluxis can help? Feel free to get in touch!

Kind regards,
Isa Veltmaat
